Mounkes Method
The Mounkes Method is an audio subject I periodically replay.
If I had to pass only one practical audio setup recommendation to friends, this is it.
The Method calculates and specifies speaker floor placement.
Better placement minimizes the compromise of distorting acoustical room modes.
It works for floor-standing and stand-mounted bookshelf speaker systems.
It works for modestly priced and audiophile high-end speakers.
The Method can significantly improve your audio without spending a dime.
My late friend Steve Mounkes introduced me to the method.
He didn’t invent the method. But Steve religiously applied it.
It was his 1st step toward opening the curtain of a magical musical stage.
The Method
• Minimize compromising room mode distortion.
• Improve stereo imaging.
• Create tighter bass.
• Reproduce clear and warmer vocals.
Method Tools
• A tape measure
• A calculator
• A pencil
• A notepad
Let’s Begin.
Create a simple quick sketch of your floor plan.
It’s a sketch. Artistic precision is optional.
Measure your room width.
• Divide your room width by the values 3, 5, 7, — and 9 for large rooms.
• Mark the results on your sketch along the room width from the front left corner.
• Then mark the results from the front right corner.
Measure your room length.
• Divide the room length by the same values.
• Mark the results on the sketch along the room length from the front left corner.
• Then mark the results from the front right corner.
Connect the dots.
• Connect the left/right length points to create lateral lines.
• Mark the width points on the lateral lines.
• Observe the coordinates established by the sketch.
• Select a pair of practical acceptable coordinates for your left and right speaker.
Speaker listener placement
• Place your speakers on your coordinate choice.
• Place your listening chair in an equilateral triangle with the speakers.
Now, sit yourself down and enjoy.
The Mounkes Method squeezes more musical thrill from your audio dollar.
